J was craving waffles and pancakes and asked if we could find some. As a rule of thumb, I stay away from Denny's/IHOP and will only go there for desserts after midnight, on special circumstances. There's nothing scarier than the thought of getting food poisoning from "Moons over My Hammy"....
I had heard of Jay's Coffee & Waffles a couple times in passing, but had never been able to make it over there. It's conveniently located right across from CSU Fullerton, but is slightly hidden behind the curve of the building, next to The Habit and The Flame Broiler.
I wasn't sure what to expect, although I did know that waffles were $4.44. Yes, you read that correct. Now it isn't just $4.44 for a waffle and toppings are extra. The price includes ALL THE TOPPINGS YOU WANT. As a fruit maniac, I was ecstatic. (Why can't Yogurtland be like that?!)
The restaurant is much larger than it looks; hardwood floors, wooden tables, and comfortable couches give it the typical coffee shop feel with an elegant twist. We were greeted by the man behind the counter (Jonathan) who graciously explained everything. We were given sheets of paper to fill out and check off exactly what we wanted. Both J and I went with buttermilk waffles. He was much more tamed with his choices than I was!
My buttermilk waffle included: mangoes, mandarin oranges, bananas, strawberries; mango drizzle; vanilla whip crème; chocolate chips, powdered sugar. I didn't feel too guilty about it as it was brunch. ;) All the fruit was fresh and delicious. The choices were out of this world! Things that I will have to try next time, in some sort of combination include: nutella, apples, strawberry whip creme, granola, and blueberries. The portion size was massive for the price, and I could barely finish one waffle!
J and I also shared (well, he had most of it) an Oreo Shake, which was so delicious! The first thing I noticed about it when I picked it up was that it was so heavy. It reminded me of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and how it's much heavier and more dense than its competitors because it's made with real ingredients. That's always a good sign!
On my way out, a large map on the wall caught my eye. Many people had marked where they were from and I was eager to join in the fun. Just as I took out an orange pin to mark on Sri Lanka, I was greeted by a man who began talking to me about the value of such a "conversation piece." After J and I talked to him for a few minutes, we realized he was the owner. When we asked if he was Jay, he said no, but that "Mitch's Coffee & Waffles" just wouldn't sound so great! Mitch was a kind, knowledgeable soul who truly warmed up the restaurant and gave it that Mom & Pop feel.
He spoke of his employees with such respect that it was easy to see why the establishment ,which just celebrated its 1st Anniversary, was so well-run. The three of us continued to chat for about fifteen minutes next to the map, just like old friends. Mitch talked of his past jobs, ideas for new products (a very special tea strainer) and the addition of pasta to the menu (!!!!).
It's people like Mitch who give Fullerton businesses a great name. I had high expectations going into Jay's, and left feeling inspired, eager for new plans, and, of course, quite full!
I highly recommend you head on down to Jay's Coffee & Waffles, but make sure you come with an empty stomach!
