Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge music fan. I used to frequent concerts on a religious basis during high school and had a wide range of tastes, including Switchfoot, Augustana, Jack Johnson, Jack's Mannequin, etc. However, my favorite performing duo, hands down, is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Different parts of your life call for different types of music, and I don't just mean day to day. One year you may be in your "punk" phase, while another hour you may be throwing one back while listening to some country music. Music (and its lyrics) has a beautiful way of tying into our lives in the perfect ways; a pick me up or an amplifier of your moods, in a way.
Last June, I bought J tickets for the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis concert. I took him out to dinner for his birthday (Carlitos Gardel in Beverly Hills...if you have a chance, go! Great Argentine food. But I digress..) and surprised him with some gifts. The last gift he received was a pair of tickets to see the duo. Words can't begin to explain how excited he was. The only issue was the 6 month countdown.
The concert finally came on December 4th. We headed out to Staples Center in LA with food, blankets, games, and iPad in tow, as we knew it would be a long day of waiting. We arrived several hours after schedule at noon, but were about twenty people back in line. We got comfortable (it was awfully cold, by our standards at least!) and made friends with a sweet pair of girls named Jessie and Rachel. Wanz, who helped Ben with vocals on "Thrift Shop" made an appearance. Super sweet man and it was great joking around with him! We were treated to a special jazz performance, led by Owur, J and mine's favorite trumpet player.

As hours went on, it got colder, but the excitement to see my favorite duo increased by the minute. The anticipation was unreal! Unfortunately, many people cut in line, but what's to be expected? We finally made it in to the venue and I was pretty shocked by how large it was; shamefully so, as a So Cal native, I had never actually been inside the home of the Lakers. We firmly planted ourselves center stage, front row, and were determined to hold our ground. There were two opening acts, which didn't help my anticipation to see Ben and Ryan rock it. Then...the concert started. I'm not sure if I even have the words to explain it, because it was THAT good. I've been to countless concerts, but this was, by far, the best I have ever experienced. I use the word experienced rather than attended because Ben and Ryan did a solid job of making it an experience, a give and take of sorts. Lines of communication were open on both sides. What a show!
